To have the opportunity to experience and discuss the 30 many good short films spread over five screenings was a true joy, interesting, and incredibly inspiring as we all had a variety of perspectives. There were surely more good films than awards available, but we were a team with each unique expertise and together we felt we were able to select a variety of excellent short films by talented filmmakers and their team members which reflect the current landscape in the film industry in Finland. It makes it exciting to see their future projects while we are also looking forward to a more diverse representation of film makers on the big screen.
Granada (New Wave Award) by director Terhi Nieminen
We wanted to award the filmmaker who has captured something authentic and raw. This film felt like it was alive and we the audience could join her road of grieving. The film tells a seemingly small story about hardships in relationships. Instead of trying to capture the whole world but instead focuses on something personal and detailed. The film is also about a special relationship and finally letting go and about the possibility of new beginnings.
